Life at the Sanctuary

These are the rescued animals that have not been adopted and will live out their lives at the Sanctuary. There are various reasons that their forever homes have not been found such as health issues, age, size (too big), breed (or not purebred), sex, color or general lack of interest of potential adopters. At the Sanctuary they enjoy the life that they so richly deserve as valued members of the family.

Roc

Roc Picture

When Roc first came to the rescue as a young adult male he weighed a mere 50 pounds. Having failed guard dog training due to his good nature and sweet disposition he was no longer wanted. Despite mistreatment from people on numerous occasions Roc still greets everyone with a wagging nub and a happy smile. He takes his job as the Orphan Network Greeter very seriously.

Zeus

Zeus Picture

Zeus was rescued from a horrible puppy mill when he was 6 wks. old. The mill was being shut down & the miller had to get rid of the animals since he could no longer profit from them. Zeus was one of the lucky ones. Although unfortunately, he has a very severe case of hip dysplasia. His condition is a result of repeated inbreeding at the mill. He can often be seen standing sentinel with his best canine companion Roc at the gates of Orphan.

Lacy

Lacy Picture

Lacy was given up by a breeder that was not able to sell her because she was ill and not expected to survive. In fact, 2 of her littermates died. She weighed just 10 oz. & was severely dehydrated from coccydia and was in need of surgery to correct 4 hernias and a cherry eye. She formed such a strong bond with her caregiver during her recovery that she was not able to be placed in a new home. This tough little girl can always be seen bouncing around with a toy in her mouth.

Abby

Abby Picture

9/30/09- Abby suffered a massive stroke & had to be euthanized on this day. Taking her picture & story off this webpage does not seem to be appropriate nor could we ever bring ourselves to do so. She was one of the most special creatures that God ever created. She lived 13 yrs. at the Sanctuary & never failed to greet each & every person that visited. She was the happiest little girl who always had a twinkle in her eye. She was given the very best of care all the days of her life with her foster family. She was cherished by every volunteer involved with Orphan. We will miss her terribly each & every day.

Abby's story is quite tragic. She was a stray that was hit by a car at a young age. Even with a broken back & leg that would later require amputation, she crawled along the side of the road until she came to the fence of the Sanctuary. Today, she runs around the yard as if she has no idea that she only has 3 legs. What she is missing physically she more than makes up for in heart. She has such a bubbly personality & is adored by all who meet her.

Misty

Misty Picture

Misty is a small Maltese that had been intentionally bred multiple times with a black lab. She was pregnant with her third litter of pups and her previous litters had died soon after she gave birth. Her owners had said that since she could not raise her pups, they no longer wanted her. The first 3 years of her life were spent outside while subsisting on pork chop bones. Due to many untreated ear infections, she is deaf. She now spends most of her time finding the perfect place to snuggle up & relax.

Sara

Sara Picture

Sara was thrown from a car on a busy road frequented by coal trucks. When her rescuers stopped to see if she was okay, she surprised them by jumping into their car. She has gastrointestinal problems that requires a special diet. True to her Jack Russell nature, she struts around like a dog 10 times her size. Running up & down the fenceline is one of her favorite pastimes. Along with the cute doggie habit of biting her toenails.

Riley & Sheba

Riley & Sheba Picture

Riley's story is a very sad one. A victim of long-term abuse from his former owner, he had multiple broken bones when he first arrived. His skin is riddled with scars from the beatings that he sustained. Despite all of this, he is one of the sweetest dogs you could ever meet. Pet him just once & he will be your best friend for life.

Sheba and Riley are so inseparable that it is difficult to get a picture of them not together. Sheba is not only Riley's protector but also his doggie girlfriend. She even has quite the jealous streak when other girls are around him. In fact, she never leaves his side so she can keep close tabs on him at all times.

Nova

Nova Picture

This beautiful girl was re-homed at 5 mos. old because her previous owner was moving. Since she has become completely inseparable from Orphan's youngest member, she will reside permanently at the sanctuary.

Viper

Viper Picture

Viper is a very special dog who came to us very underweight & covered with sarcoptic mange, fungal infections & fleas. He is nearly unrecognizable today as the proud & majestic dog shown in the photo. He is truly an ambassador of this wonderful & often misunderstood breed. He has an amazing personality & lots of love to share with all who are granted the opportunity to meet him.

Tyson

Tyson Picture

Tyson came from a breeder who inexplicably had him & his sister (who each weighed just 1.5 lbs.& were fully grown) on a chain in the backyard. This did not however, prevent a much bigger dog from entering the yard & killing the sister. Tyson survived the attack with a severe wound that left him with a scar that covers half of his entire head. He has adapted quite well to life at the sanctuary where he has become the ultimate lap dog & bed hog (now weighing in at a whopping 4.5 lbs.).

Malakai

malakai Picture

Malakai was a 6 wk. old puppy found wandering on a rural road all by himself. A concerned motorist picked him up & brought him to us. He was full of worms, hungry, very dehydrated & flea-infested. He is adored by all who meet this beautiful boy.

Felix

Felix Picture

Felix was found outside all alone when he was approximately 2 weeks old. We brought him into rescue where he was bottle fed and cared for around the clock. He is a very sweet & loving cat that makes a perfect companion.

Uno

Uno Picture

Uno was found abandoned in an unventilated building with 16 other cats. Four of them perished. Uno lost an eye & had severe burns on her feet due to the strong ammonia fumes from urine. Sometimes it is hard to forget that she is a cat as she acts more dog-like in many ways. She is a very exceptional cat that is like no other.

Freedom

Freedom Picture

Freedom had a home until her owner died. The house sold & the cat was kicked out on the street. She wandered the neighborhood for 8 months. One day a volunteer spotted her scratching at the front door of her former house to get in. She was caught in a humane trap baited with food within just 6 hrs. as she had been starving for quite some time. She was then brought to Orphan where she has been a wonderful feline companion.
